Helping Agencies Meet Plastic Waste Reduction Goals: What MAS Contractors Need to Know

The GSA is taking another big step toward sustainability with the finalization of the Reduction of Single-Use Plastic (SUP) Packaging Rule, amending the GSA Acquisition Regulation (GSAR). This initiative aims to reduce single-use plastic waste by empowering contractors and federal agencies to prioritize SUP-free products and packaging.

The highlight? A new SUP-free icon on GSA Advantage! makes it easier for agency buyers to identify products that align with federal plastic waste reduction goals.

How to Get the SUP-Free Icon for Your Products

As an MAS contractor, you have two opportunities to showcase your commitment to sustainability:

  1. SUP-Free Shipping Packaging Contractors can identify SUP-free shipping packaging in their schedule contracts. Shipping packaging refers to protective materials that ensure safe transport of goods to the customer.

  2. SUP-Free Brand Packaging Manufacturers can highlight SUP-free brand packaging by selecting the appropriate field in the Verified Products Portal (VPP). Brand packaging refers to the primary and secondary packaging used to bundle, sell in bulk, market, or display individual products.

Get Ready for the SUP-Free Packaging Rule

GSA will soon release a modification with detailed instructions on how to designate products with SUP-free packaging. Once the system is live, the SUP-free icon will automatically be applied to applicable products on GSA Advantage!

To prepare, review your products to determine which meet the definition of SUP-free packaging and visit the Strategies to Reduce Plastic in Packaging page on GSA's Sustainable Facilities Tool to familiarize yourself with the new icons and criteria.

Why This Matters

The federal government is actively working to meet sustainability goals, and reducing single-use plastic waste is a critical step. By aligning with this initiative, MAS contractors can strengthen relationships with federal buyers prioritizing eco-friendly solutions., demonstrate your commitment to sustainability and gain visibility for your SUP-free products with the new icon on GSA Advantage!
